Avian Extenstion

Research Focus

  1. Development and application of Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR), Multiplex PCR for avian pathogenic mycoplasmas ReverseTranscitase-PCR, PCR and Multiplex PCR for Reovirus, Adenovirus and infectious bronchitis virus (IBV), Salmonella spp. Campylobacter spp. (Food-borne pathogens) and meat spoilage bacteria (PCR, Quantitative and Multiplex PCR). Development of Real Time PCR for avian pathogens
  2. Molecular Epidemiology: Arbitrarily primed (AP) PCR fingerprinting for Salmonella enteritidis isolates of avian and human origin. Ribotyping and AP-PCR for Proteus spp, ERIC-PCR for serovar differentiation of Hemophilus paragallinarum.
  3. Pathogenesis of Salmonella enteritidis (SE) and mechanism of attachment, adhesion molecules and host receptors. Vaccine and SE specific diagnostic tests development.
  4. Pathogenesis and Molecular characterization of S genes of infectious bronchitis virus (IBV). Development of recombinant DNA-vectored vaccine for the infectious bronchitis virus (IBV). In- ovo vaccination trials of IBV recombinant DNA vaccine using interferon as an adjuvant.
  5. Pathogenesis and surveillance of Avian Influenza virus outbreaks in New England

Molecular Diagnostic Tests available for:

Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) for Adeno virus, Infectious bronchitis virus (IBV), Reovirus, Infectious anemia virus Avian Influenza (H7 and H5), Infectious laryngotracheitis virus, Avian encephalitis virus, Mycoplasma gallisepticum (Mg), Mycoplasma synoviae (Ms) and Salmonella species

Multiplex PCR IBV serotypes, Mass and Ark Pathogenic avian mycoplasmas (Mg, Ms, Mm and Mi) Immunosuppressive viruses (adeno, CAV, Infectious bursal disease and Reovirus)

Arbitrary Primed PCR Salmonella species ERIC-PCR for Hemophilus paragalinarum and Salmonella enteritidis

Development and optimization of Real Time PCR for avian influenza (H7 and H5 serotype), Newcastle disease virus, and avian pathogenic mycoplasmas are in progress
