Development of a Zika virus vaccine

A large outbreak of Zika virus, an emerging pathogen transmitted by infected Aedes mosquitos, has recently spread throughout the Americas.  Though symptoms of Zika virus infection are typically mild, there has been a startling surge of cases of microcephaly (a birth defect where the brain does not develop properly) associated with the current outbreak.  The Verardi laboratory is currently working on vaccine candidates against Zika virus, utilizing a rapid platform for generating vaccines recently developed in their lab.
